Robert Gilchrist Huenemann for San Benito County Water District Board 2018
August 10, 2018 is your deadline!
August 10, 2018 is the last day for candidates to file for the November 2018 election. This is the last day to run for the San Benito County Water District (SBCWD) Board of Directors. Why should you run for the SBCWD Board? You don’t buy water from SBCWD, do you? Wrong. Hollister, Sunnyslope, Tres Pinos and San Juan Bautista water agencies buy every drop you use from SBCWD. They pass the cost on to you. You don’t get to vote or sue. You do get to pay high water rates that subsidize San Benito County agribusiness.
If you are working and commuting, you probably don’t have time to serve on the SBCWD Board of Directors. If you are retired, your kids are gone and your water bill is a fraction of what it used to be. So you don’t feel pressure to run for the SBCWD Board of Directors. I am asking you to run anyway. Not for yourself, but for your children and grandchildren. It only takes a couple of hours a month of your time to stop water rate increases.
If you want to know more, use your internet search engine to find SBCWD. You can study the profiles of the Board of Directors, who serve districts that correspond to the County Board of Supervisors. You will also find water rates, including groundwater rates and taxes, listed under Customer Service. There is a wealth of additional information for you. Search for sbcwaterinfo.
For four years, I have served on the SBCWD Board of Directors for District 4. For four years, I have voted against any increase in your water rate. For four years, the other four members of the SBCWD Board of Directors have voted for every increase in your water rate. If you want to have a voice in setting your water rate, the ONLY way you can do this is to run for the SBCWD Board of Directors. I will run again in 2018 for District 4. You can run for District 1 in 2018. (Your District 1 County Supervisor is Mark Medina.) In Districts 2, 3 and 5 you can run in 2020. It is not too early to think about running in 2020.
There is no fee to file for election, but for $700 you can submit a candidate statement that will be printed in the Voter Information Guide for your district. This is a good way to tell voters about yourself, including whether you will vote for or against higher urban (M&I) water rates. A brief summary of your education and work experience is helpful. You can submit this on July 16, 2018 to San Benito County Elections at 440 Fifth Street #206, Hollister CA 95023.
